How do I create a new opportunity?

Learn how to create a new opportunity in TakeCost, upload drawings to start takeoffs, link a client, add a job address, or track an opportunity without drawings. This article walks through the full opportunity setup process.

Creating an opportunity allows you to upload drawings, perform takeoffs, and build your estimate for a specific job.

Create a new opportunity

  1. Click New Opportunity

  2. Enter an Opportunity Title (required)

Upload drawings (optional but recommended)

To start measuring from plans:

  1. Click Upload Drawings to Start Takeoff

  2. Select your drawing files

  3. Click Start Takeoff

Uploading drawings allows you to measure scope using the Area, Linear, and Count tools.

Track an opportunity without drawings

If you are building an estimate without performing a takeoff:

  1. Toggle Track opportunity without drawings

  2. Skip drawing upload

  3. Continue to create the opportunity

You can still add line items manually in the worksheet.

Link a client

To associate the opportunity with a client:

  1. Click Select a client

  2. Choose an existing client
    OR

  3. Click + Create new client to add one

Linking a client keeps your opportunities organized and connects estimates to customer records.

Add job address (optional)

You can include job location details:

  • Street address

  • City

  • Province/State

  • Postal Code/Zip

This information appears in project records and proposals.

Finish creating the opportunity

Once required fields are complete:

  • Click Start Takeoff to begin measuring
    OR

  • Continue to the worksheet if no drawings were uploaded
