Step 1: Confirm or Set the Drawing Scale

Before measuring anything, make sure your scale is correct.

  • TakeCost may Auto Scale the drawing based on plan details

  • Verify the scale using a known dimension

  • If needed, click Set Scale

  • Then click two points on the drawing and enter the real measurement

  • Click Validate

πŸ“Œ Accurate scale ensures all measurements (area, linear, volume) are correct

πŸ“Œ Note: Count tools do not require a scale

Step 2: Select a Takeoff Tool

At the bottom of your screen, choose the tool that matches what you’re measuring:

  • Measure – check distances or confirm scale

  • Area – surfaces like floors, slabs, or walls

  • Linear – lengths like footings, curbs, or edges

  • Count – count fixtures or repeated items

Step 3: Begin Drawing on the Plan

  • Click directly on the drawing to start your takeoff

  • Follow the prompts for the selected tool (area, line, or count)

  • Press Esc or finish to complete the measurement

πŸ“Œ Quantities are calculated automatically as you draw

What happens next?

  • Your quantities appear in the left-hand Quantities panel

  • You can assign materials and adjust settings in the Properties panel (right side)

  • Everything is ready to flow into your estimate or proposal
